Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors practice a drug-free, manual approach to health care that includes patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment. In particular, chiropractors assess patients for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, extremity joints, and their effect on the nervous system. As a result of taking a physical assessment and patient history, chiropractors are able to provide a differential diagnosis for the patient’s presenting condition(s) and develop a comprehensive treatment/management plan.

One of the many treatment options is the chiropractic adjustment. Also known as spinal manipulative therapy, the adjustment is a non-invasive, manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed with extensive training. A chiropractic adjustment is a carefully controlled procedure delivered by a skilled practitioner to dysfunctional spinal or extremity joints. The primary goal is to decrease pain, improve areas of reduced movement in the joints and supporting tissues, particularly of the spine and decrease muscle tightness or spasm through the restoration of normal mechanics and improved functioning of the spine, extremities and supporting soft tissue structures.

Medical Acupuncture

Therapeutic insertion of solid needles in various combinations and patterns is the foundation of medical acupuncture. The choice of needle patterns can be based on traditional acupuncture principles such as encouraging the flow of qi (pronounced chee), a subtle vivifying energy, through classically described acupuncture channels, modern concepts such as recruiting neuroanatomical activities in segmental distributions, or a combination of these two principles. The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body’s own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being. The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, either as an adjunct or as a primary intervention. Dr. Molloy uses Acupuncture primarily in the management of both acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Muscle Release Therapy

Muscle release therapy is a hands-on approach that allows the practitioner to diagnose and treat soft tissues such as; muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia and nerves. Muscle release therapy is indicated when the soft tissues become injured. There are many different ways that injury can occur;

1. Acute Injury
2. Repetitive Injury
3. Constant Pressure / Tension Injury

Once a tissue is injured your body will produce dense, tough scar tissue or “adhesions” in the affected area. Adhesions alter what is normal for a tissue. It ties down the tissues that need to move freely. Without treating the adhesions, the scar tissue builds up and results in:

1. shorter and weaker muscles
2. tension on the tendons
3. pressure on nerves

As a result, there is a loss of range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. A nerve can become trapped and you may feel numbness/tingling, shooting pain, burning sensations and weakness.

Each muscle release treatment consists of an exam of the tissue and treatment of the tissue. I evaluate the tissues for signs of tightness, abnormal movement and abnormal texture. Once the adhesions are located, I will apply tension to the tissue while lengthening the tissue thus breaking down the adhesions in an effort to relieve pain and restore function.

Exercise Rehabilitation

Exercise rehabilitation is used to facilitate the process of recovery from injury, illness, or ailment to return to pre-injury status as soon as possible. The purpose of an exercise rehabilitation program is to restore the patient’s physical and sensory capabilities that may be compromised due to injury, inactivity or inefficient movement patterns.

A well designed rehabilitation program can help the patient restore the proper function of muscles, bones, and the nervous system. An effective program will work to relieve pain and do all of the following:

* Enable ambulation
* Release contracted muscles, tendons, and fascia
* Mobilize joints
* Improve circulation
* Improve respiratory capacity
* Improve coordination
* Reduce rigidity
* Improve balance
* Promote relaxation
* Improve muscle strength
* Improve exercise performance and functional capacity (endurance)

Often times a patient will assume they are better once their pain subsides, but this is often not the case. It is important to address any underlying weakness, and follow up with a rehabilitation program that will correct the issue and prevent any further injury. To achieve optimal health and wellness and to prevent injury there needs to be a balance of strength, endurance and flexibility.

Kinesiotaping

Kinesiotape is made with hypoallergenic acrylic glue, is manufactured to be the same weight, thickness and elasticity as the skin and is therefore able to integrate with the body’s sensory system naturally.  There are 3 possible categories of effect which have been identified depending on the method of application and the therapeutic outcome desired.

1.) Structurally
* Dynamically supports better postural positions.
* Prevent harmful ranges of motion without a hard end feel.
* Reduce strain on affected muscle.
2.) Neurologically
* Enhanced sensory stimulation leading to decreased perception of pain.
* Restoration of normal muscle activation and function.
* Reinforces the restoration of functional stability.
* Promotes peripheral neuroplasticity.
* Stimulation of the skin’s endogenous analgesic system.
3.) Microcirculatory
* Wave pattern formation.
* Superficial fascial thixotrophy.
* Improved lymphatic flow.
* Improved superficial microcirculatory flow.

Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy is a non invasive treatment to promote accelerated recovery of injured soft tissue, bone, heel and joint pain.

A shockwave is an intense, but very short energy wave traveling faster than the speed of sound. The basic technology involved with extracorporeal shockwave technology has been used for decades on millions of people.

Therapy sessions are short, usually 20 – 30 minutes in length, and provide successful relief of chronic pain and restore mobility painlessly. Permanent relief typically begins about 72 hours following treatment.

Shockwave has been shown to have up to a 75%-95% Success Rate.

Personal Training

Mark’s approach as a strength coach and personal trainer is both functional and dynamic and he enjoys working with a diverse range of clients, from beginners to advanced athletes. All training will start with Mark functionally assessing the client/athlete in an effort to locate any specific areas of weakness, poor motor control or lack of stability. In the initial assessment it also important to go over a thorough health history, discuss any injuries present, review current training routine and nutrition habits and set realistic an achievable short and long term goals. Based on the gathered information Mark can then customize a program best suited to meet the individuals needs.

Personally, Mark has most extensively been involved with the sport of hockey after playing junior hockey in Canada and coaching minor hockey in his home town. Now he enjoys having the opportunity to train and educate young athletes along with keeping them injury free and in the game. Mark has trained NCAA soccer players, professional basketball players and many young hockey players and skiers.

His training employs a solid understanding of biomechanics and anatomy to improve speed, strength, power, balance, and core stability.
He takes great pride in staying on top of the latest research on training and using his knowledge and experience to educate his clients and empower them to be in control of their own health and fitness.

Also as a certified Chiropractor and Acupuncture provider, if necessary he can combine training sessions with muscle release therapy, acupuncture, manipulative therapy and corrective exercise. This multi-dimensional approach gives his clients all the tools necessary to stay injury free and achieve the best results possible with their training.

Custom Orthotics

Orthotics are custom-made inserts that fit inside the shoe. They are specially designed to decrease abnormal motion of the foot while allowing for normal movement. Orthotics realign your feet to a more usual or “neutral” position, restore balance, improve sports performance and serve to eliminate or reduce foot, back and leg pain by improving function and efficiency. Orthotics can increase stability and motion control, offer extreme shock absorption, and correct biomechanical imbalances due to leg length discrepancies, uneven hips, or tight musculature.

Orthotics are also useful for treating and managing conditions such as overpronation, flat and painful feet, fallen arches, plantar fasciitis, low back pain or hip pain, knee or ankle pain, achillies tendon problems, chronic ankle sprains, Bunions or hammer toes and metatarsalgia.

Many different types of orthotics can be manufactured depending on which shoe you would like support for. Orthotics can be made for a variety of shoe wear including running, cross trainers, dress, golf, casual, work boots, skates, skis, and sandals. Custom made shoes, boots and sandals can also be ordered in top brands such as Birkenstock®, Saucony®, Sketchers®, Lacoste®, Florsheim®, and Merrell®.
